Actress Yvonne Jegede has expressed frustration over the state of Nigeria, saying she no longer believes Nigerians are worth fighting for because of the backlash she receives whenever she speaks out.
In a series of posts shared on her Instagram Stories, Yvonne lamented that she is often criticised simply for calling attention to the country’s challenges. According to her, the constant attacks have taken a toll on her mental health.
She also appeared to react to First Lady Remi Tinubu’s appeal for celebrities such as Davido and Burna Boy to support initiatives aimed at reducing poverty. Questioning the expectation placed on entertainers, Yvonne argued that citizens already work hard, pay taxes, and should not be expected to shoulder responsibilities that belong to the government.
“So after they work hard to earn and then pay their taxes, they should help the government provide a better life for the masses, while the tax collected is meant for some family members,” she wrote.
Describing the emotional strain she has experienced, she added, “This country has stretched my mental health to its limits.”
Reflecting on the criticism she faces, Yvonne said, “The more I speak about the unusual things happening in my country, the more people drag me. I now understand why many people choose to stay silent during difficult times. I wasn’t born to look the other way when humanity is being trampled upon, but Nigerians aren’t worth fighting for because bigotry has become the order of the day.”
