Victor Boniface Set for Knee Surgery, Faces Possible Season-Ending Layoff

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface is set to undergo surgery on a persistent knee injury, according to reports from Germany.

The Nigeria international, who is currently on a season-long loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen, has struggled with recurring fitness problems throughout the campaign. Boniface has yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Bremen this season, managing just 326 minutes of playing time due to the ongoing knee issue.

According to German publication BILD, Bayer Leverkusen’s medical team has advised the forward to undergo surgery after the injury failed to improve. The problem was sustained during a training session in early December and was initially considered minor, but persistent pain has since raised concerns.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes and Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz are reportedly in discussions to reach a joint decision on the best course of treatment for the player, with talks expected to conclude before Christmas.

Boniface’s injury history adds further concern, as he has previously suffered two cruciate ligament injuries in his career. Should he proceed with another operation, the 24-year-old striker is likely to miss the remainder of the season, dealing a significant blow to both club and country.
