Understanding Defamation: A Legal Perspective By Celebrity Barrista

According to Black’s Law Dictionary 11th Edition ” defamation is a malicious or groundless harm to the reputation or good name of another by the making of a false statement to a third person”

Defamation is the publication of statement which tends to lower a person in estimation of right-thinking members of society generally… The motive or aim of defamation is to make people shun, hate, ridicule or avoid that person…

Defamation is of two types
(1) Libel: this is a written form of defamation… This happens when you try to belittle someone in a printed form e.g Newspaper, Write-ups, book, letter or even a Notice…

(2) Slander: is defamation in a transient form, most often through the medium of spoken words or gestures… Simply put, Slander is when you open your mouth waaaah to lower another in the estimation of right-thinking members

Most of you call it “AMEBO”… The funniest thing about defamation is, ” it could be a/an true or untrue statement”… It is a crime to open your mouth waaaah and say what you don’t know or even if you know it to be the truth so long as it reduces the other in the eyes of right-thinking people…

Section 375 of the criminal code says ” subject to the provisions of this chapter, any person who publishes any defamatory matter is guilty of a Misdemeanor and is liable to imprisonment for one year, and any person who publishes any defamatory matter knowing it to be FALSE is liable to imprisonment for two years”

Defamation is both a CIVIL WRONG and a CRIME… Meaning, you could be sued for damages which could be in a monetary form or be sentenced to year(s) imprisonment…

IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NOT AN EXCUSE…
