President Bola Tinubu has proposed a record ₦5.41 trillion allocation for defence and security in the 2026 national budget, making it the single largest sectoral allocation in the spending plan.
The proposal marks the third consecutive year that security has topped federal budget priorities since the Tinubu administration began presenting national budgets in November 2023.
Tinubu disclosed the figures on Friday while presenting the ₦58.18 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly. He stressed that national security remains the bedrock of economic growth, investment attraction and social stability.
Under the proposal, defence and security spending of ₦5.41 trillion exceeds allocations to critical sectors such as infrastructure, education and health. The move reinforces a trend seen in the 2024 and 2025 budgets, where security consistently received the highest funding amid ongoing challenges posed by terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
