X Ends Creator Revenue-Sharing Programme, Introduces Original Content Rewards

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has announced the end of its existing creator revenue-sharing programme as it moves to a new system designed to place greater emphasis on original content.

The platform said applications for the current programme closed on August 7, while the final payment cycle will cover eligible creator earnings through September 7.

The revenue-sharing programme allowed eligible creators to earn money from engagement generated by their posts. Participation was limited to users subscribed to a paid X Premium plan who also met the platform’s eligibility requirements.

However, X said the programme created incentives for some users to repurpose or repost existing material rather than produce original content.

Allegra Jacchia, X’s head of creators, said the company had therefore decided to replace the programme with a new system focused on rewarding creators for producing original work.

\Under the new Original Content Rewards programme, eligible creators will earn money based on qualified impressions generated by their original posts.

Payments under the new system will be made every two weeks, provided creators and their content continue to meet X’s eligibility requirements.

According to X, qualifying original content can include threads, videos, memes, original reporting, analysis, commentary, reactions, photographs, graphics, illustrations and other forms of creative work.

Content that significantly transforms existing material through original analysis, narration, humour or creative editing may also qualify.

The platform said the new programme is intended to reward creators who contribute original ideas, expertise, creativity and value to conversations on X.

For now, access to the Original Content Rewards programme is limited to creators who are already participating in X’s existing revenue-sharing programme.

To qualify, creators must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Live in an eligible country.
  • Have a Personal or Business X account.
  • Subscribe to an eligible premium X plan.
  • Have at least 500 verified followers.
  • Generate at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within a 90-day period.

Creators can submit their applications through Creator Studio.

X said applicants whose applications are rejected will have the opportunity to appeal once. They can also reapply after 90 days, provided they continue to meet the programme’s requirements.

Creators currently enrolled in the old revenue-sharing programme will still receive their outstanding earnings, with the final payment covering eligible earnings through September 7.

Meanwhile, the first payout under the new Original Content Rewards programme is scheduled for August 28.

Eligible creators who enrol from September 8 are expected to receive their first payment on September 25.

The introduction of Original Content Rewards marks a significant shift in X’s approach to creator monetisation.

By tying rewards more closely to original posts and qualified impressions, the platform appears to be seeking to encourage creators to produce more distinctive and valuable content rather than relying heavily on reposted or repurposed material.

For creators already building audiences on X, the new system could provide another opportunity to monetise their work—provided they can meet the platform’s eligibility requirements and consistently produce content that qualifies under the new programme.
