The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Nollywood actress Omotola Odunsi, popularly known as Motola the Actor. The news of her death was confirmed on Thursday, July 31, 2025, though the cause of her death has not yet been made public.
Her colleague and close friend, Akinola ‘Segbowe’ Akano, took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news. In a touching tribute, he posted screenshots of their last conversation along with photos of the late actress. According to Akano, Omotola had earlier assured him that she was recovering and feeling better.
“Motola! Strange but I tried checking on you at the wee hours of that morning. You said you were FINE & BACK! This is a rude shock, Omotola! Journey well, sister. God be with your family,” he wrote.
Veteran Nollywood actor Odunlade Adekola, who served as a mentor to Omotola during her acting career, also confirmed the tragic news. In a short but emotional post, he wrote, “Jesus Christ. RIP Omotola.”
Before delving fully into acting, Omotola worked as a credit officer at a state-owned bank. In 2019, she took a bold step to follow her passion, resigning from her job to pursue a career in Nollywood.
Over the years, she made a significant mark in the Yoruba movie scene, starring in several popular titles such as Ajanaku, Darkness, Ogo Oluwa, Dagogo, Ariran, Doctor Adunni, Folagbade, President Kuti, Amonata, Officer Adaeze, Ifedayo, Ayanmo Ire, and Lisabi: The Uprising.
Omotola Odunsi will be remembered not only for her exceptional talent on screen but also for her resilience and dedication to the craft. Tributes from fans, colleagues, and loved ones continue to pour in as the industry bids farewell to one of its bright stars.
